Zone 2, VO₂ Max, and Training for a Longer Life

April 20266 min readLUMA Clinical Team

If VO₂ max were a pill, it would be the most valuable drug ever made. Going from low to even below-average fitness is associated with a mortality reduction larger than quitting smoking.

The two-part engine

Think of cardio fitness as a pyramid. The base is Zone 2 — steady effort where you can still hold a conversation, roughly 60–70% of max heart rate. It builds mitochondrial density and fat oxidation, and because it’s low-strain you can do a lot of it without wrecking recovery.

The peak is VO₂ max work — short, hard intervals (classic: 4 minutes hard, 4 minutes easy, repeated four times). This raises the ceiling of your engine. The ceiling matters because everything you do at 80 sits easier when your max is 160.

A week that works

The LUMA take

We estimate VO₂ max at baseline, prescribe zones off real data rather than formulas where possible, and re-test quarterly. Watching your engine grow is the single most addictive graph in the membership.

Why it shows up in your bloodwork

Aerobic base training drains the same swamp your labs measure: fasting insulin falls, triglycerides fall, resting heart rate falls, HRV rises. The panel and the training plan are two views of one system — which is exactly why we run them together.
